largest group coming from Europe (20.9%), followed
by ASEAN (17.3%) and the Middle East (11.3%). The
importance and value of MIFF was echoed by

The continued success of MIFF was lauded by
officials from Malaysia’s Ministry of Plantation
Industries and Commodities. At the Opening

that “the furniture showcase comprises not only
reputable furniture manufacturers and exporters
from Malaysia, but also world famous names from
other countries around the world”.
Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry, YB
Senator Dato’ Dr S Vijayaratnam further applauded
the efforts of the show’s Organizer for adding
value to the fair through the organization of
competitions and seminars that give benefit to the
industry and establish a continued mark of
excellence for Malaysian products.
According to past audited records, it is at MIFF
where over 30% of the nation’s furniture export
sales take place.
The good performance and significant economic
contribution made of the fair has received the
highest accolade from the Government of Malaysia
for the exhibition industry when it was awarded
the inaugural Best MICE - Exhibition of the Year

reflection of the show’s importance in the
furniture world especially with over 10 similar
shows being held in Asia during the

collectively the booths will help promote the
furniture fair by generating interest and
curiosity from visitors, helping to enhance and
heighten appreciation for the products”.
The inaugural MIECO Designers’ Choice Award

IFFS/AFS 2007 ENDS ON HIGH NOTE WITH
 |
|
USD 240 MILLION IN SPOT ORDERS
Event Will Expand To Seven Halls in
2008 |
|
|
|
IFFS/AFS
2007 achieved an attendance of 17,322 trade
visitors from 117 countries at the recent five-day
International Furniture Fair Singapore 2007 and 24th
ASEAN Furniture Show which ended on 5 March. Once
again, the best and varied mix of Asian furniture
designs coupled with the participation of
high-quality international exhibitors contributed
to the success of the event which achieved an
estimated USD 240 million of spot orders.
Amongst the visitors, there were 66
buying delegations from 17 countries. An
additional USD 2.1 billion of follow-on sales are
expected as a result of the opportunities secured
at the fair. IFFS/AFS 2007 also generated
approximately USD 38 million in economic spin-offs
for Singapore’s Meetings, Incentives, Conventions
and Exhibitions (MICE) and tourism sectors.
In terms of the scale of the fair,
IFFS/AFS 2007 was the largest in its 24-year
history, providing a useful platform for the
forging of an unprecedented number of potential
global trade partnerships. It hosted a record 510
exhibitors from 28 countries of which, many had
increased their exhibition space. This resulted in
the show being 10.7 percent bigger than 2006 with
60,000 square metres in gross space (or 39,300
square metres in net space) spread across all six
halls at the Singapore Expo.
With more than 35,000 pieces of
designer furniture and furnishing products on
display, IFFS/AFS 2007 offered unparalleled
variety and quality buying opportunities. These
included the largest collection of Chinese,
Filipino, Indonesian, Taiwanese and Vietnamese
furniture products, exhibited outside of the
respective countries.
In addition, IFFS/AFS 2007 provided
a breath of fresh air when it came to match-making
between designers and manufacturers with a total
of 92 first-to-market furniture prototypes by
young designers from the region who took part in
various design initiatives including the annual
Furniture Design Award, FL!P Challenge and the
inaugural PLATFORM.
Mr Craig Swift, Client Services
Manager of Sacred Earth, one of the 41 exhibitors
from Vietnam at IFFS/AFS 2007, said: “We have
exhibited at IFFS/AFS for three consecutive years
and have always had successful shows. 2007 was by
far the most productive for us with quality buyers
from a large spread of regions and markets. We
have already signed up for 2008, where we are
confident of building on the success from the
previous shows.”
Mr Steven Chew, Chief Operating
Officer of Sitra Holdings (International) Limited,
Singapore, added: “We are pleased to see that
IFFS/AFS has grown from strength to strength since
its inception. We see tremendous value in
participating in IFFS/AFS because of the
exhibition’s ability to attract top international
buyers and other industry professionals from all
over the world. We were able to grow our sales
directly and indirectly through the show and this
show has become a must-have in our annual
marketing calendar.”
Impressed with the quality and
variety of the show, Mr Al-Karim Chatur, a VIP
Buyer from Eztia Furnishings, Canada, said: “Our
participation at IFFS/AFS 2007 was a huge success.
We have always found the Singapore show to be our
treasure trove. And as the saying goes, ‘the early
bird catches the worm’, IFFS/AFS has proven to be
our gold mine and by placing it as the first show
to visit in the ASEAN furniture trade show
circuit, we have always been able to achieve what
we want.”
Echoing similar sentiments, another
VIP Buyer, Mr Nicholas Pastos from Narde Ltd,
Cyprus, said: “Once again, IFFS/AFS was very well
organised and my colleagues and I were able to
find a myriad of good designs and high quality
furniture at the exhibition.”
Mr Tony Pang, Chairman, IFFS/AFS
Show Advisory Panel, said: “We are heartened that
IFFS/AFS has once again proved valuable to the
global furniture trade players. The efficiencies
of Singapore such as our business-oriented
facilities and services, effective transport and
logistics system as well as safe and cosmopolitan
environment have continued to help boost our
leadership position as a trendsetter in furniture
designs as well as in reaffirming and catalysing
businesses in the region. I’m certain expectations
for next year’s fair will be raised and I am
confident we will gear up to meet the challenges
ahead.”
Indeed, the size and scope of the
fair will be expanded when the IFFS/AFS returns
from 1 to 5 March next year. IFFS/AFS 2008 will
occupy seven halls at the Singapore Expo, allowing
an additional 10,000 square metres of floor space
for exhibition. To date, more than 12,000 square
metres of exhibition space for the 2008 fair have
already been booked by more than 50 companies.
Mr Quek Chin Tuan, Chief Executive
Officer of IFFS Pte Ltd, added: “We remain fully
committed to growing, improving and value-adding
to the fair so as to provide both exhibitors and
buyers a more rewarding networking, buying and
selling experience. In fact, we have taken into
account the feedback which we have received from
trade visitors and exhibitors and will be moving
the dates for the fair closer to the China shows.
IFFS/AFS 2009 will be held from 8 to 12 March. Our
objective is to ensure that IFFS/AFS continues to
respond to the needs and demands of industry
players by minimising travel inconveniences which
will allow for more effective scheduling of
itineraries.” |

DUBAI WOODSHOW
2007
 |
|
EUMABOIS ENTERS INTO AN EXCLUSIVE PARTNERSHIP WITH
WOODSHOW TO BRING EUROPEAN MARKET LEADERS TO
THE ARAB REGION. |
|
|
|
Dubai Woodshow 2007, the dedicated wood and wood machinery
exhibition in the Middle East, will feature an extensive European line-up, headlined by the European
Federation of Woodworking Machinery Manufacturers
(Eumabois), the foremost international trade
association for the European wood industry.
Organisers of the Dubai Woodshow, Strategic Marketing & Exhibitions,
have signed an exclusive partnership agreement
with Eumabois to jointly promote Dubai Woodshow.
Eumabois is the federation of 13 European national
associations representing the largest
manufacturers of machinery and accessories in Europe for the wood industry. The 800 manufacturers cooperating with Eumabois
account for an annual production of more than 53.2
billion EUR, which represents close to 60 per cent
of global production of wood working machinery and
tools.
“The support of Eumabois is representative of our focus and
commitment to position Dubai Woodshow as the only
platform for opportunities and serious business
for wood trade in the region. As the leading
player in the European woodworking industry,
Eumabois certainly has a lot to offer in terms of
modern technologies and innovative products for
the growing construction and real estate sector in
the UAE and the neighboring GCC states,” said
Dawood Al Shezawi, Managing Director, Strategic
Marketing & Exhibitions. “Today, leading companies
across the globe are looking to the
Middle East as the new growth market and are
seeking to tap the opportunities presented by the
construction boom throughout the region. A highly
specialized show like Dubai Woodshow will go a
long way in helping to take advantage of this
global interest in the Middle East market.”
Dubai Woodshow 2007, which is also supported by the Dubai
Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI), American
Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) and Czech
Woodworking Machinery Manufacturers Association (CWMMA),
provides an excellent platform for regional and
international companies to showcase their latest
wood machinery and woodworking products to
business prospects and build new strategic
relationships with buyers, traders and investors.
The show made its debut in April 2006 against a
backdrop of heightened demand for wood and
woodworking products in the
Middle East, mainly due to sharp increase in
construction activities across the region.
“Wood imports to the UAE stand at an all-time high and with
other regional countries witnessing a similar
surge in wood consumption, a comprehensive trade
fair like Dubai Woodshow will serve to add further
momentum to the strong growth of the wood and wood
machinery industry in the Middle East,” said
Gianni Ghizzoni, President of Eumabois. “In line
with Eumabois' strategy, the decision has been
made to avoid too many events being scheduled,
which would only take up the time of exhibiting
companies. Instead a single trade show will take
place where high technological content of the
sector is made visible to potential users and
trade visitors. Dubai Woodshow 2007 will help us
to explore partnerships from the
Middle East region and showcase our quality
equipment, machinery, tools and products for the
region’s woodworking industry.”
About Dubai Woodshow 2007

SFIC UNVEILS WINNERS OF SINGAPORE FURNITURE
INDUSTRY AWARDS 2006
 |
|
|
|
The Singapore
Furniture Industries Council (SFIC) announced the
results of the prestigious Singapore Furniture
Industry Awards (SFIA) 2006.
Underscoring the
Council's continuous push to raise the profile of
the Singapore furniture sector globally, the SFIA
honors outstanding enterprises and individuals who
have made significant contributions to the
industry. SFIA comprises two award categories,
namely Enterprise and Individual. The awards that
fall under the Enterprise Category are Furniture
Manufacturer, Furniture Retailer, Interior Builder
and New Entrant while the Outstanding Individual
Award anchors the Individual Category.
This year, SFIA
saw an increased of 30 per cent in
participation compared to the inaugural event
in 2003 with a total of 64 nominations across
the award categories. For the first time, the
New Entrant Award is presented to 'newly'
established companies, which have been
established for three years or less as at 31
May 2006 as well as those that have been
operating under a new brand name or a new
management which significantly impact the
company's performance within the same period,
in recognition of their ability to penetrate
and gain a significant share of the furniture
market within a short span of time.
Mr James Koh,
President of SFIC, said: "We are most
heartened by the strong interest and
participation in SFIA 2006 by local industry
players. It signifies the industry's
recognition of the Awards as a highly coveted
honor and it being an
effective platform for
companies to benchmark themselves against the
best in the industry."
Mr Kenny Koh,
Chairman of SFIA 2006 Organizing Committee,
said: "The SFIA is the first award of its kind
within the Singapore furniture trade
fraternity. It identifies leading enterprises
with outstanding competencies and best
practices in international business
development, furniture retail and contract
manufacturing as well as recognizes the
efforts of industry individuals with exemplary
performance, conduct and attitude. Through the
Awards, we hope to promote entrepreneurship
and develop strong human capital for the
industry."
The SFIA was initiated
as a part of the Furniture Industry Capability
Upgrading Programmer. Open to all
Singapore-registered companies in the furniture
and related business, nominees for the Enterprise
Category were judged based on financial growth,
market leadership and management philosophy. Those
nominated for the Individual Category on the other
hand, had to excel in performance, leadership,
commitment as well as achievements and
contributions to the company. The distinguished
panel of judges comprises government and industry
representatives.
Mr Wilson Chew,
Chairperson of SFIA 2006 judging panel, said: "The
judges had a tough time deliberating over the
results of SFIA 2006. To maintain the high
standards of the Awards, we exercised stringent
assessment of the nominations and had given credit
only to those truly deserving of it. We are
however impressed with the overall caliber of the
nominees. The winning enterprises in particular,
exhibited sound management, innovative business
strategies, strong corporate philosophy and robust
financial performance. The winner of the
Outstanding Individual Award also amazed us with a
strong zest for work and commitment towards
lifelong learning. If what we've seen can be used
as a yardstick for the industry's achievements,
then I believe the future of the Singapore
furniture industry is very promising."
"We are proud of the
accomplishments made by our local furniture
industry players. Leveraging SFIA, we will
continue to spur companies and individuals towards
greater successes and create more Singapore brands
that will help consolidate Singapore's position as
an International Furniture Hub," added Mr James
Koh.
Winners of SFIA 2006
will be acknowledged at an Awards Ceremony held in
conjunction with SFIC's 25th anniversary Dinner
and Dance at the Raffles City Convention Centre
tonight. The Awards will be presented by Mr Gan
Kim Yong, Minister of State for Education and
Manpower, who will be officiating at the event.
SFIA 2006 is supported
by the Design Singapore Council, International
Enterprise (IE) Singapore, SPRING Singapore and
the Singapore Institute of Architects. |

Fair 2006 was jointly organized by Ministry of
Trade - Vietnam Trade Fair & Advertising National
Company, Paper Communication Exhibition Services
and Yokers Trade & Marketing Service Co., Ltd.
VIETNAMWOOD reaches first milestone with a list of
impressive endorsements from prestigious
woodworking and furniture related industries. It
is supported by EUMABOIS (European Federation of
Woodworking Machinery Manufacturers - a federation
grouping 12 national associations representing the
major European manufacturers of machines and
accessories for woodworking), VDMA (German
woodworking machinery manufacturers), ACIMALL
(Italian woodworking machinery and tools
manufacturers association),AFEMMA (Spanish
woodworking machinery, tools ,equipment and
products manufacturers association),TWMA (Taiwan
woodworking machinery association and WMMA
(Woodworking machinery manufacturers of America)
are accounted, and assisted from Vietnam
government officials and local industry
associations. It was held from October 19-22, 2006
at a new venue, Phu My Hung International
Exhibition centre (PIEC).
To
continue the success and earning public praise,
the scale of the fair was expanded farther this
year, and it is expected to be more than 155
exhibitors and 14,000 trade visitors from Vietnam,
its neighboring countries and Asia. There were
numerous well known world-class leading brands
which came from more than 17 countries including
Chine, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India,
Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore,
Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, United
States, Vietnam and etc., participating and
displaying a total number of 430 booths. The theme
focused on various woodworking machines, cutters,
furniture accessories, and semi-finished products.
VIETNAMWOOD is the only one professional
exhibition held in Vietnam, it is making its
presence felt in Vietnam through a high degree of
professionalism and quality of exhibitors. There
were also many visitations from industry
specialists, and foreign industrial delegates from
countries such as Italy, Germany, Spain, United
States, China, Taiwan and India.
Vietnam is currently on its way to become a
leading furniture manufacturing country in Asia.
Due to the lack of modern manufacturing technology
and skills, the Vietnam international woodworking
industry fairs are developed to address this need
and anticipation of Vietnam’s furniture
industries, bringing benefits to the local
woodworking manufacturers through improvement in
technology, skills and opportunities to replace
outdated machines. |

AWFS®FAIR
: A WINNER OF TRADESHOW WEEK’S FASTEST 50 AWARD
 |
|
|
|
The Association of Woodworking & Furnishings Suppliers®
biennial tradeshow in Las Vegas,
the AWFS®Fair, is a winner of the 2006
Tradeshow Week Fastest 50 award. In
2005, the Fair was also promoted nine spots – from
51 to 42 – making it into the top 50 of the
Tradeshow Week 200.
“We are absolutely thrilled to receive the
Fastest 50 Award from Tradeshow Week.
For the second time in a three show period, we
are honored to be among the prestigious list of
the 50 fastest growing tradeshows in the country.
For a show that’s celebrating its 50th
anniversary in 2007, this is an incredible
accomplishment and we are excited as we continue
developing this event into a dynamic, destination
experience that’s not only a great business forum,
but also a lot of fun,” said Skip Hem, Royal
Plywood vice president, composite panel division
and AWFS president.
The show, formerly known as the Woodworking
Machinery and Furniture Supply Fair® began in the
basement of the Ambassador Hotel in 1957. It
moved to the old LA stockyards then on to the LA
Convention Center in 1977, outgrowing that venue
ten years later and moving ion to the Anaheim Convention Center
which it outgrew in 2005. The move to the Las Vegas Convention Center,
literally doubled the show’s growth potential. The
2007 AWFS®Fair will offer over 500,000
net square feet of modern show space, well-suited
for an international trade event. As of August 31, 2006,
over 421,000 net
square feet of exhibit space had already
been sold, making the ’07 event the largest in the
history of AWFS®Fair. The exciting new
features for 2007, the inclusion of the Fair in
the U.S. Department of Commerce’ International
Buyer Program and the addition of the Wood
Industry Forum, announced last month in Atlanta,
will contribute to the future growth and value of
this premier event.
Tradeshow Week will honor the winners of the 2006
Fastest 50 award in Boston this November at
a black-tie gala. Founded in 1911, AWFS is the
largest national trade association in the United
States representing companies that supply the home
and commercial furnishings industry. AWFS
has an international membership that
includes manufacturers and distributors of
machinery, hardware, lumber, upholstery,
materials, bedding and other supplies to
furniture, cabinet manufacturers and custom
woodworkers. The AWFS®Fair is a
biennial event in which buyers and manufacturers
gather from around the world to buy and sell the
latest products and services related to the wood
and home furnishings markets. |

LIGNA + HANNOVER
2007 OPENS ITS GATE TO A DAZZLING ARRAY OF
TRADESHOW HIGHLIGHTS
 |
|
|
|
WOODEN DREAM-HOMES BUILT TO ORDER
LIGNA+ HANNOVER opens its gates on
14 May 2007 to a dazzling array of tradeshow
highlights. One of these, in Hall 17, is a display
of two timber homes organized by the Association
of Lower Saxon Carpenters (VNZ). The homes, a
single-family home and a somewhat larger duplex
unit, will be built on site. The organizers are
already seeking prospective owner-developers, who
will be able to acquire the buildings at favorable
rates of between one and ten percent below their
market value. The building creators and their
architects will design and build the houses to
their future owners’ requirements and then put
them on display at LIGNA+ HANNOVER 2007. When the
show is over, each house will be relocated to a
site of its owner’s choosing.
Wood is an eco-friendly, natural and renewable raw material
that has been used for house building for hundreds
of years. And in recent times, the imperative to
save energy and conserve resources has seen wood
grow further in popularity as a building material.
Building and carpentry firm Karl Hoffmeister GmbH,
Lamspringe, Germany, will be building a 140–160
square-meter (1,507–1,722 sq. ft) timber-based
so-called ‘Passive House’ on site at LIGNA+
HANNOVER. Like the Low-Energy House standard
before it, the ultra-low-energy Passive House (PassivHaus)
standard is becoming increasingly common in the
timber construction sector. PassivHaus houses
outperform conventional houses on thermal comfort
and efficiency by a large margin thanks to
state-of-the art, highly economical construction
and ventilation systems. Because they don’t
require conventional heating systems, their energy
consumption for space heating is minuscule,
resulting in ultra-low operating costs.
the second house for which the organizers are seeking a buyer
will be built by Otto Baukmeier Holzbau Fertigbau
GmbH & Co. KG,
Hamelin, Germany. This will be a modern,
timber-skeleton Bauhaus-style single-family home.
Built in accordance with the “KfW 40” low-energy
standard, it will feature state-of-the art thermal
insulation.
DEVELOPER/OWNER WANTED FOR COMMERCIAL,
MULTIPURPOSE DISPLAY PAVILION
Wood has a multitude of uses as a building and construction
material. And nowhere will this be more clearly
evident than at the LIGNA+ HANNOVER 2007
tradeshow, which runs from 14 to 18 May. There, in
Hall 17, the display stand operated by the
Association of Lower Saxon Carpenters (VNZ) will
feature two wood-based family homes and a
timber-frame pavilion. For the latter, the
organizers are currently seeking a
developer/owner. The pavilion will be a
low-maintenance structure made of native German
timbers, a plentiful, renewable resource.
In terms of prospective developers/owners, the building would
be suitable for small businesses, community
organizations, sports clubs, kindergartens, etc.
It could also be used as an extension to an
existing school building, an office, or a
showroom. The pavilion will be built by
Ing.-Holzbau Cordes GmbH & Co. KG,
Rotenburg, Germany, in close consultation with the
developer/owner, who will also be entitled to a
sizeable trade fair discount.
The pavilion can be tailored to the developer/owner’s
requirements. The building firm has already
constructed an eight-sided, timber-frame pavilion
that can be used as a reference point. The
pavilion’s load-bearing structure consists of
angled truss members connected by dowel joints. It
has a gross floor area of 212 square meters (2,282
sq. ft) and a capacity of 1,293 cubic meters
(45,662 cubic ft).
Developer-specific requirements can be incorporated into the
design of the multi-purpose pavilion before it
goes on show at LIGNA+ HANNOVER, from 14 to
18 May 2007. |

McGUIRE LAUNCHES ITS NEW OUTDOOR COLLECTION BY
ORLANDO DIAZ-AZCUY |
|
|
|
Contemporary Designs for
Outdoor Living
McGuire Furniture
Company has introduced stunning new outdoor
designs by Orlando Diaz-Azcuy. The introduction
includes a harmonious balance of design-driven
materials that results in sophisticated,
contemporary seating and tables for outdoor use.
Elegant design, innovative functionality and
exceptional comfort are the hallmarks of the
8-piece collection, executed in powder coated
aluminum, which is an expressive continuation of
Diaz-Azcuy's 10-year relationship with McGuire.
Diaz-Azcuy's eye for architectural elements and
reverence for the highest quality materials and
craftsmanship are reflected in this collection;
each clean, artistic silhouette marries the
designer's appreciation for classic forms and
desire for modern simplicity. In keeping with
McGuire's mission of creating contemporary,
functional art of lasting value, the collection
includes a lounge and dining chair; chaise; sofa
as well as dining and occasional tables. "Orlando
embraced the challenge of creating outdoor designs
that offer the style, and more importantly, the
comfort, of fine, fully upholstered indoor
furniture," said Jason Phillips, president –
McGuire, of the collection's seating pieces. "The
designs in this collection are a testament to both
clarity of vision and skill of execution."
Materials and Craftsmanship
Answering the call for
clean-lined, lightweight metal outdoor furniture,
Diaz-Azcuy fashioned this aluminum collection to
appeal to a modern sensibility. The collection is
offered in two powder coated finishes – Bronze
Metallic and a non-metallic Seashell White – that,
when paired with fabrics from McGuire's Headlands
Collection of outdoor textiles or customers' own
materials – offer designers considerable
versatility.
Crafted with exacting
precision, joints are executed to maximize
strength and durability, then hand-finished to
preserve the designs’ clean lines and minimize the
appearance of welds. Each of the seating pieces
features ergonomically-curved seat slats and
generous cushions for maximum comfort. The seat
cushions are made from drainable foam; back
pillows utilizing a new technology called Proguard
offer the look and feel of a down-blend indoor
lounge cushion.
Padded slings wrap
completely around the backs and arms of the frame
for a clean, sleek look, while reducing the
opportunity for bare arms to come into contact
with hot surfaces. Pads are tightly secured by
Velcro, allowing for easy removal and cleaning.
All lounge pieces are featured in McGuire Textile
PHOT115 Ottoman Weave in 'Sand Dollar' from the
Headlands Collection. McGuire has engineered the
entire Headlands Collection to represent the
finest outdoor fabrics in the industry: soil- and
mildew-resistant, 100% solution-dyed acrylic and a
three-year warranty against fading. Graphic rungs
and a curved leg of the lounge seating and
cocktail table exemplify the bold design of this
collection. These graphic qualities are striking
yet subtle details.
The three tables carry
the theme of modern simplicity to every last
detail. Lines are clean. Corners are triple mitred.
Tables come standard with a honed Fossil Limestone
tops; one on the spot table and a top and bottom
shelf on the side table. Additional resin tops, in
14 colors, by renowned artist Martha Sturdy are
also available. "Renowned as a designer's
designer, Orlando has once again designed
furniture that plays an instrumental, yet
supporting role in the expression of a designer's
vision," added Phillips. "The forms allow
designers to make bold statements with their
fabric choices on the seating pieces, and their
material choices – ranging from stone to resin –
on the table surfaces."
|
|
Lounge seating
Deep seats,
generous drainable foam cushions and a powder
coated finish provide for low maintenance
luxury. The lounge seating and dining chair
sit and feel like indoor furniture while
unquestionably adding style and grace to any
outdoor area. Light in weight, these pieces
are easily transportable and can be arranged
for any occasion.
According to Diaz-Azcuy, "Many of my own
projects incorporate outdoor living spaces. I
continually have sought outdoor furnishings
that allow me to
create compositions that read as an extension
of indoor living spaces. I believe this new
collection finally makes this possible." The
Lounge Chair is the signature piece of this
collection, with its rectilinear silhouette
softened by the graceful compound curve of its
rear legs. Integrated seamlessly into the
chair's
front edge, a discrete slatted shelf,
its lines echoing those of the chair, provides
a surface for supporting a book, newspaper or
handbag under the front edge of the
cushion. Bold and distinctly modern, this chair
was the inspiration for the rest of the
collection. The
Sofa follows the design direction of the Lounge
Chair. At 74" long, it comfortably seats three,
and at more than 32" deep, it calls for
relaxation. One generous, boxed seat cushion and
three loose, water-repellent poly-fill back
cushions give this design its luxurious comfort.
The Chaise Lounge, at
almost 82" long, was designed with comfort and
relaxation in mind. The back adjusts to two
ergonomic positions and the cushion is attached
securely with a wide, Velcro-sealed fabric band,
preventing it from shifting on the frame. The
gracefully curved legs provide a subtle
counterpoint to the design's linear elegance. The
Dining Arm Chair follows the design direction of
the other 3 seating pieces. Smaller in scale than
the lounge chair but equal in comfort, it
perfectly complements the Dining Table Base. The
strikingly graphic frame has a generous seat and
contoured back cushion and a comfortable pitch.
Removable arm and back pads continue the
conversation of contemporary upholstered style in
an outdoor setting.
Tables
Four inspired
designs by Diaz-Azcuy greatly expand the
company's repertoire in outdoor tables and use
of materials. With bases light in weight, the
tables are grounded by fossil limestone or
resin tops and shelves. The character of the
Dining Table is expressed in its dramatic
graphic base with subtly curved legs, and
accentuated with a selection of tops. It comes
standard with a 54" diameter, 3/4" thick honed
Fossil Limestone top.
When featured with
the semi-translucent vanilla resin top, the
light reflected through the table top to the
base and ground below gives the illusion of
weightlessness and movement. Its simple
elegance is a result of a strong design,
married easily with the strength of materials
and quality of craftsmanship.
Lastly, Diaz-Azcuy has designed a stylish yet
innovative trio of occasional tables. The
Cocktail Table, at almost 48" square, is a
solid statement of contemporary design.
Distinct in its scale and proportion, it is
the largest of the tables, and was designed
with entertaining in mind.
A row of evenly spaced rungs compose the
frame, expressively curved
legs
give it strength and a solid limestone or resin
top provides a harmonious composition of sleek,
timeless materials.
The Side Table has a
top and middle shelf, about 24” square, also
offered in limestone or resin. The shelfless Spot
Table, at 17" square, is lightweight and easily
incorporated into any outdoor setting. Square in
shape, simple in scale and design, these pieces
readily complement the dining and lounge pieces.
Availability The
Outdoor Collection by Orlando Diaz-Azcuy will be
available beginning Summer 2006. The pieces will
be sold through McGuire's flagship showrooms in
New York and San Francisco, through Baker Knapp &
Tubbs Showrooms and select independent showrooms
nationwide, and to consumers through Baker stores.

ZOW in Shanghai anticipated with high expectations
 |
|
More than 150 furniture suppliers will make the
trip to China |
|
|
|
The countdown has started. Only a few weeks to
go before ZOW – the exhibition for suppliers
to the furniture industry and interior design
sector opens for the second time in Shanghai.
Held at the SNIEC from September
11-14, 2006,
and running parallel with "Furniture
China", ZOW will be the venue for a wealth of
supplier innovations to create the
furniture of tomorrow.
More than 150 exhibitors have registered so far
for this unique show and more than 12,000 trade
visitors
are expected. "Chinese furniture manufacturers are
looking forward to the second ZOW in Shanghai with
excitement," reports Bernd Rademacher, Managing
Director of event organizer, Survey Asia Marketing
+ Consulting. The show is an important platform
for the Chinese and Far East markets.
The ZOW concept has also been extremely
well-received in China by suppliers and furniture
manufacturers. Complete off-the-peg packages, open
access stands, contact-friendly communal spaces
and a comprehensive range of services, such as
entry, parking and catering all free of charge,
attract exhibitors and visi
tors alike. The focus is purely on the products on
show and the interface between and visitors,
rather than the acres of displays that often come
with international exhibitions. Discoveexhibitors
ring product innovations in a creative workshop
environment, establishing and developing contacts,
getting to know and conquering new markets - these
are the factors that carry ZOW, whether in
Shanghai or elsewhere.
In the biggest furniture markets in the world -
Germany, Italy, Spain, Russia and China - ZOW is
aimed at furniture manufacturers at each location.
Staged wherever it can target a concentration of
businesses in the furniture industry, ZOW enables
regional as well as international players in the
supply sector to reach their respective sales
markets. In China
alone, there are more than 50,000 furniture
manufacturers, the majority of whom will be
exhibiting at "Furniture China"
and will use the opportunity to visit ZOW. Stefan
Jager, General Manager of Shanghai Fennel,
confirms, "For us, ZOW in Shanghai
is a major gateway to Asia's growth markets." That
includes China,
of course, but also Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand,
Malaysia and more recently Vietnam. And India's
mass market certainly has its own special role to
play here.
With an annual economic growth rate of 10%, China
is one of the fastest growing markets in the
world. This country is home to 1.3 billion people,
with per capita income expected to double by 2010.
The construction boom continues unabated:
currently 80 per cent of public funds are directed
into the construction of houses and apartments,
and by 2015, around 20 million people per year
will be moving into new accommodation. And the
situation with regards to other Asian growth
markets is similarly positive. Even though rates
of economic growth have not quite reached the
level experienced in China, nevertheless these
countries are also seeing the development of a
free-spending middle class, attracted to top
quality products. A progressive policy of economic
liberalization and the opening of markets to
foreign investors are the factors which have
created these favorable conditions.
ZOW: gateway to the Asian market
Overall, the Asian market offers excellent sales
opportunities for the international furniture
supply industry. But it's essential to find the
right way in. In this context, ZOW in Shanghai
serves as an exhibition and information platform,
which not only highlights the current design
trends within the industry but is also able to
contribute in the search for the right business
partners. It's the show event that you can't
afford to miss! |
