Successful 1st International Competition of Industrial Design in
the Wood Industry
The winners of the 1st International Competition of Industrial Design in the Wood Industry, organised by ASEMAD (Valencian Association of Manufacturers of Joinery and Related Products) were Ricardo Andrés Tomás, for his deign of the “Simpla Line” kitchen and Juan Lloveras, designer of the “Neo” door and the “Nautilus” door handles.
The 1st International Design Competition for the Wood Industry, organised by ASEMAD as part of the new “Living with Wood” project at MADERALIA was, according to the organisers and promoters, a resounding success in terms of participation and the welcome received by exhibitors and attending visitors at the fair.
The Winners
This first edition of the Competition was divided into two categories: Professional and Student.
The winner of the Professional category, which came with a €3500 cash prize was Ricardo Andrés Tomás, a designer for Andrés Equipamiento Integral, for his “Simpla Line” kitchen. The winning also retains ownership of copyright, intellectual and industrial property rights,
Juan Lloveras, a designer for Codifel, won the award in the Student category which was accompanied by a €2500 cash prize, for his “Neo” wood door presented in combination with the “Nautilus” handles.
Mission Accomplished
The goal of this International Design Competition for the Wood Industry is to promote the use of wood and design within industrial joinery.
In this regard, ASEMAD is implementing new and original strategies to prepare companies in the industry for the future. “We no longer believe in the models we have been seeing over the last twenty years” claims Jorge Linares Ferrán, general secretary of ASEMAD, “and the future must be based upon design, R&D and internationalization”. The first edition of the competition featured many innovative designs of doors, floorings, windows, and stairs, among other construction elements.
“We want to promote innovation within the Spanish industry of wood joinery” explained the general secretary of ASEMAD, “and in this ongoing task we have the full support of the public administration, business associations and the trade fair that sets the standards for the whole industry: we all believe in design, R&D, and international promotion as a way to respond to the growing competition from Asia and Eastern Europe, based on serialised products with less added value.”
Simpla Line
Simpla Line is a new design for kitchen equipment. Rather than attempting to compete with the current modular system for kitchens, it was designed to fit in with these systems, opting for a simpler and more essential line of kitchen furniture in which users can store and have easy access to objects used everyday, thus avoiding unnecessary physical effort.
These cupboards are limited to one horizontal strip in between 45 cm and 90 cm from ground level. It contains exclusively pull-out systems with a depth of up to 65 cm.
These drawers are supported and framed by a structure consisting of the assemblage of sheets of phenolic board, perfect for their high resistance to torsion and damp.
Simpla Line only has 18% less storage capacity in comparison with lower standard modular systems. However, it provides an optimal worksurface, both for its height which is adaptable to each user, as well as for its 76 cm width.
All plumbing, electricity and gas installations can be fitted inside the legs, adapting access and airing to comply with existing regulations, both when placed against a wall or as an island.
The shape and lack of obstacles on the lower part make Simpla Line a kitchen system perfectly suited for disabled persons using wheelchairs.
The structure is put together in situ, thus facilitating transport and storage of the kitchen.
Neo and Nautilus
The front part of the leaf of the Neo door consists of birch board, covered with aluminium and overlaid with cherry wood board. The back is a birch board overlaid with maple plywood. The jamb and the profiles are made on a base of MDF fibre covered with 0.5 mm aluminium in mirror gloss or matt-plated.
The door comes with a set of solid lime and cherry wood handles with an ergonomic design. The handles are called Nautilus, and belong to the Taktils2005 collection of design handles from CODIFEL-MUNTIART® designed by Joan Lloveras.
The door has been made with CODIFEL PANNEL-Decor (a product patented by the company CODIFEL from Barcelona).

AMERICAN HARDWOOD COMPANIES TO PARTICIPATE IN INDIAWOOD 2006
As India’s economy grows, the demand for affordable Kitchen/Office/Bedroom and other wood based products continues to grow. As consumption levels increase, the need for mechanization of wood processing becomes mandatory. In addition, as the market matures the use of quality raw materials makes a cutting edge difference to successful production. INDIAWOOD since it’s inception in 1999, has been instrumental in gradually creating a successful woodworking Industry, by providing a platform for the woodworkers in the Asian region to meet, interact and more importantly source quality machinery and raw materials.
Recognizing the fact that INDIAWOOD is the only platform in the region that provides growth opportunities, newer exhibitors from hitherto un-represented regions and segments are targeting the Indian market by participating in large numbers. The AMERICAN HARDWOOD EXPORT COUNCIL (AHEC) an association representing the Hardwood Exporters and major hardwood product trade associations from the United States and a Brazilian consortium of timber exporters are exhibiting in Indiawood 2006 through their respective pavilions. Even the Japanese who traditionally looked to cater only to the home and the US market are now looking at making forays into the Indian market through INDIAWOOD.
The success of the TAIWANESE wood working machinery companies in the Indian market post their participation in the 2004 edition has prompted the Taiwan woodworking machinery association and the Taiwan association of Machinery Industries to double their size in the 2006 edition. The Taiwan pavilion now stands at 1386 sq. mtrs. Even as news of Taiwan’s success in the Indian market is making the rounds, the Koreans, the Chinese and the Malaysians are now vying for a share of the Indian market by participating in the 2006 edition. Indiawood 2006 currently stands at about 15000 sq mtrs and continues to grow in size as more and more exhibitors are evincing interest to participate.

ANOTHER STORMING MONTH FOR FLOORING RUSSIA 2005!
FLOORING RUSSIA 2005
INTERNATIONAL FLOORING & SURFACES EXHIBITION
11-13 OCTOBER 2005 ~ EXPOCENTR, MOSCOW, RUSSIA
With just the last few months remaining for the run up to the 3rd edition of Moscow’s only dedicated flooring show we are proud to confirm yet again more ground breaking news .
With exhibitors from Denmark, Turkey and the US having now confirmed we are delighted to welcome in addition a flurry of activity from India. India is one of the largest international exporters of both machine made flooring and hand woven carpets new exhibitors Antique craft, RMG Poly Vinyl India and 1000 plus recognize the importance of the show to the industry, with all 3 signing simultaneously it has shown their commitment to Russia . We asked the CEO of RMG Poly Vinyl India why he sees great potential in this market and why he has chosen Flooring Russia 2005 to represent them.
“Russia has always been a big market and after a few years the Russian Trade has developed and is now considered a prosperous market. I see great potential and an increasing growth till 2025. For this reason I choose flooring Russia 2005 to launch our product into the market.” Darren Benyon Project manager for Flooring Russia quotes “these 3 months prior to the show (October 11-13) are our busiest. The momentum created through National Pavilions from China, Finland and Greece to name just a few has resulted in a wave of interest from independent companies, as a result they too are guaranteeing their presence in the Russian market by booking a stand at Flooring Russia 2005”.
“The Russian market for building materials and products, roughly estimated at USD 5 billion in 2003, has been growing steadily at a rate of 10-15% for the last two years, matching the growing demand in the construction industry and of the emerging Russian middle class. Industry experts foresee further growth of this sector at a rate of 15-20% annually in the near future. This increase in demand for quality building products is generated predominantly by the recovery of the Russian economy following the 1998 ruble devaluation, especially in import substitution industries, and high prices for oil. These two factors have contributed to a strengthening and expanding of a middle class that, in turn, is driving the building materials industry. The local distribution system is quickly developing and the number of retail outlets dealing with home hardware and building products continues to rise steadily”.
VIETNAMWOOD 2005: International Trade Fair of Woodworking Machines and Tools
Incorporating: Furniture Accessories and Semi-finished Product for the Woodworking Industry
The 5th Vietnam International Woodworking Industry Fair 2005 will open its door to the public on October 19th to 22nd at HIECC. This will be the most dynamic exhibition and its exhibition floor is estimated to be about 7000sq. meters, and there will be about 15 countries participating the fair. We give our gratitude to European Federation of Woodworking Machinery Manufacturers (Eumabois) and Wood Machinery Manufacturers of U.S for their contributions that had increased the exhibition’s attraction and professional level.
Vietnam is currently on its way to become the number one
furniture manufacturing country in Asia. Due to the lack of modern
manufacturing technology and skills, the Vietnam International
Woodworking Industry Fairs are developed and highly anticipated by
Vietnam's furniture industries. During the 2004's exhibition,
participating organizations came from 15 different countries
around the world; they are China, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong
Kong, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Swiss,
and U.S. There are a total number of 360 booths, and had attracted
14,288 visitors from Vietnamese and worldwide. The theme focused
on various woodwork machines, cutters, furniture accessories, and
semi-finished products. Business interactions took over the
exhibition floor and most transactions were made on site. The Fair
had earned many well-deserved phrases from local and international
exhibitors, buyers, and visitors.
Another worth noting point, the Vietnam International Woodworking
Industry Fair is currently the only large-scale professional
exhibition held in Vietnam. Its professionalism and high quality
of its participating exhibitors are the first to be seen in
Vietnam. Its many visitors are specialist in related areas, which
is different from other Woodworking Fairs. The fair has received
assistance from Vietnam government officials and local industry
associations, and it looks forward to our visiting foreign
industrial delegates from Italy, Germany, China, Taiwan, India,
and such. The 5th Vietnam International Woodworking Industry Fair
2005 hopes to bring benefits to the local woodwork manufacturing
industries, improvements in technology and skills, and
opportunities to replace its outdated machines.

AWFS®Vegas" Proves To Be A Winner
On-site Attendance up
22%
Mid-West, Eastern US and International Visitors Dramatically
Increase
Largest Show in History of EvelJ
The numbers are in: "AWFS® Vegas" had a total registration of 30, 323 including a record 19,866 attendees. Verified total attendance of 24,289 for the Wednesday through-Saturday show days, July 27 to July 30, 2005, was up 37% fro_ 2003. Verified attendee numbers increased 22%, for a total of 17,045 - the largest attendee crowd in the history of the show.
In addition, "
AWFS® Vegas " had the largest exhibit space of any show in its
history with 418,435 net square feet of exhibit space, filled with
898 exhibiting companies, nearly a 20% increase in both exhibit
space and number of exhibitors from 2003. The demographics for the
inaugural Las Vegas event were markedly different from past
Anaheim fairs. While California still represented the largest
group of attendees, attendance from every other state increased
dramatically, with 44 of 50 states experiencing triple digit
percentage increases. International attendance more than doubled,
with a 134% increase. "We have achieved our two main goals, of
increasing our attendance by 20% without sacrificing quality, and
of making this truly a national, indeed, an international event,"
notes Dale Silverman, executive director of the Association of
Woodworking & Furnishings Suppliers® AWFS® Vegas. "In addition,
exhibitors are telling us they've seen more qualified buyers this
year than at any other previous "AWFS® Vegas" "We were extremely
pleased to see our attendee numbers up from the mid-west, east and
southern states," adds Angelo Gangone, " AWFS® Vegas trade show
director. He shared some statistics: Texas had a 284% increase,
Ohio a 278% increase, Illinois a 133% increase, Indiana an
astounding 692% increase, Michigan a 216% increase, North Carolina
a 185% increase and Florida an impressive 374% increase. "Our
western states were up as well including Nevada, Utah, Arizona,
Washington, and Oregon with gains of 248%, 142%, 77%, 73%, and 47%
respectively
Attendees and exhibitors have indicated they like the
new venue, the new show days and hours, the convention center and
the city itself. According to Robert Slater, Optimizing Group
Manager of Weinig Group "This wasn't a good show, it was a great
show! It far exceeded our expectations in terms of the actual
sales that were generated during the event, as well as the amount
of post-show leads that we are following. In addition, we were
really excited by the demographic makeup of the attendees. We
expected more attendees from the East and Midwest because of the
new venue but could not believe how many customers we met with
from all over the country. Also remarkable, we had very steady
traffic well into the last day of the show, something that doesn't
typically happen on the last day of any show." Doug Kemp of Kemp
Hardware, a long time exhibitor who initially had doubts about the
new venue had similar thoughts. "This was a great show! I saw all
the buyers I used to see in Anaheim and a whole lot of new people
as well. Friday was a record-breaking day for us and Saturday was
even better! In fact it was the best last day of any show I've
been to in years." Exhibitors confirmed the attendance statistics,
with many anecdotal stories of meeting with new contacts and
generating new leads. "We met so many new people this year, it was
fantastic," said Kevin Fong of Decorative Specialties. Max Salmi,
marketing manager ofBiesse America stated that " ‘AWFS® Vegas '
was the best 'West Coast' show Biesse has ever had in its
history." Stephanie Sorrels, marketing manager of Interior
Products Inc. stated, "This was the largest show in the last six
years in terms of sales leads generated. We will be expanding our
booth in 2007 and maybe adding a second one!" Morgen Harrelson,
ofwgsonline.com, a first time exhibitor, noted when picking up her
display at the First Timer Exhibit Showcase that she was "very
happy", that after so much planning and preparation, the show had
actually exceeded their expectations.
Pre-registration figures were close to on-site attendance, which
was a new phenomenon for the AWFS® Vegas. "In past history of "AWFS®
Vegas, pre-registration would run high, but there would be many
"no-shows" as people would get busy with orders and never carve
out the time to get to the local event." explained Silverman.
"Because Las Vegas drew in people from further away, they had to
make a more serious commitment to attend, including hotel
reservations and travel arrangements. We are thrilled with this
new development as it means pre-registration figures are more
indicative of actual attendance.
Participation was also high for the College of Woodworking
Knowledge® (CWWK), increasing by 74% over 2003 Fair levels with
3,722 participants.
The AWFS® Awards dinner was a great success and sold out before
the Fair opened. Scott Phillips, host of the PBS series "The
American Woodshop," served as Master of Ceremonies for the
professionally-produced event. A star-studded stage and two large
video screens added to the evening's excitement. AWFS® Vegas
President Barry Howerton of Leggett & Platt noted that the night
showcased the future of the industry, recognizing the talent of
the future woodworking students as well as innovative new products
with the AWFS® Vegas Sequoia Awards. He also thanked the AWFS®
Vegas Board of Directors for making the courageous decision to
move to Las Vegas. "In hindsight we know it was a wise decision,
but 2 years ago, it was not that easy," said Howerton.
