The Indonesian Furniture Entrepreneurs Association (Asmindo) is showcasing high-end traditional wood and rattan-based furniture at the 2010 Shanghai Furniture International Exhibition, targeting middle and high-class customers.
“We hope that our exports to China could reach US$20 million this year from only $9 million in 2009, which was hit by the global financial crisis, ending the year with a 20 percent slump from 2008,” said Asmindo chairman Ambar Tjahyono.
Ambar said Indonesia’s furniture exports to China peaked in 2004 at $14 million.
He said that 20 companies would participate in the Expo to show their products in a 700 square meter showroom, from June 2 to June 4. There would be 10 companies from East Java, four companies from Cirebon in West Java, four from Yogyakarta and two from Jakarta.
Indonesia’s total global furniture exports in the first quarter increased by 14.88 percent to $673.84 million up from $586.56 million in the same period last year.
Asmindo targets $2.59 billion for furniture exports this year, an increase of 15 percent up from $2.25 billion last year.
The association urged government support to help the furniture industry to increase exports by 15 percent this year.
